What are ball valves?
A ball valve has a ball shaped disk that rotates in order to start or stop the flow of liquid or gas. The rotating ball usually makes a 90° turn around its axis in order to open and close.
Ball valves are one of the most widely used valves because they are more suitable for both liquid and gas. They are usually made of iron, brass, bronze, iron, or PVC. They are also more resistant to contamination compared to other types of valves.
Ball valves are known for their reliable sealing aside from and throughout their lifespan.
How does a ball valve work?
What are ball valves when it comes to their working principle? The fluid flow is controlled either manually or through actuation as the port of the ball valves can be opened or closed. For the manual option, an operator controls the valve with handles or levers. For hydraulic, electric, and pneumatic actuation, an operator isn’t required to control the valves. However, for complex control systems like the ones on remote areas that operators cannot easily access, the actuation option is ideal.

Ball valves in terms of Application or uses
What are Ball Valves in Refineries
These ball valves are used as isolation and shut-off valves for:
-Tower-bottom lines and thermal cracking units
-Gas/ oil separation lines
-Measuring, metering, distribution, and pressure regulation of gas stations
-Oil loading control stations, pumping, and compressor stations
-Emergency shutdown loops
-Refining units
Application of Ball Valves in Power Industries
-Control and shut-off for steam
-Boiler feedwater control (burner trip valves)
Ball Valves in Chemical and Petrochemical Complexes
Ball valves are the preferred choice in chemical processing plants because they are known to handle highly viscous fluids and abrasive slurries in process and storage facilities. They are used for low differential pressure control and emission control.
Ball Valves in Gas and Oil Production
Understanding what are ball valves and their applications is crucial in oil and gas operations where they are: -Used to regulate, start, or stop the flow of gas, oil, and other fluids inside the system -Safely transports and controls fluids in high-pressure operations -Allows efficient remote control of the flow for automated systems
What are Ball Valves in the Pulp and Paper Industry
Among other applications, ball valves are employed as shut-off valves in pulp mill and batch digester blow services, liquor filling and circulation systems, lime mud flow management and dilution water regulation.
Water Industry Applications of Ball Valves
Ball Valves are used in municipal water treatment plants to regulate water flow in processes like filtration, chlorination, and distribution.

Use of Ball Valves in HVAC Systems
Ball valves are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to control the flow of water and refrigerants in both commercial and residential spaces.
Other Uses of Ball Valves
-Manufacturing
-Food Industry
-Marine and Solid Transport
-Water Supply and Transport
Ball Valve Standards
These are international codes and standards for Ball Valves:
Design Standard: API 6D / ISO 14313 / BS EN 17292 / BS 5351 / MSS SP 72
Testing Standard: API 6D / API 598 / BS 6755 Part I / MSS SP 61
Fire Testing Standards: As per API 6FA, API 607, ISO 10497, or BS 6755 Part II
Dimensional Standard: ASME B16.10 / API 6D
What are ball valves and their Parts?
These are the major parts of a ball valve:
Valve Body
This is the main part of the ball valve containing all of the components for on/off control. It is a pressure level designed to connect two or more sections of pipe to each other.
Rotary Ball
A ball with a flow path (tunnel or hole) which the media flows through. The flow path of the ball is through one axis connecting the inlet and the outlet. The direction of the ball is controlled by the stem.
Stem
A shaft that connects the ball to the external control mechanism to facilitate rotation of the ball.
Seats
These are round donut-shaped discs that lie in between the body and the ball providing the seal between the two and also supports the ball.
Power Source
In order for the ball valve to be rotated by the stem, manual or actuated power sources provide energy. In manual actuation, the operation uses levers and handles for control. Automated power sources included electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuation.
Packing
The packing is a flexible seal that fits around the stem that prevents the media from escaping through a valve.
Bonnet
The bonnet is the part of the ball valve body that houses the stem and the packing.
What are ball valves and their benefits
These are the benefits ball valves offer:
Fast shut-off speeds: they can be quickly and efficiently opened or closed with just a 90° turn of the handle
Less prone to corrosion or damage: they are highly durable withstanding high pressure, temperature and other chemicals making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
Versatile and ideal for a range of industrial applications: available in different types of materials, sizes, and configuration that makes them useful in different industries like oil & gas, water industry, chemical & petrochemical, HVAC, etc.
Long service life: Its resistance to corrosion and wear along with its compact and economical designs contribute to its long service operational life.
