What is hydraulic power?
Hydraulic power is the power transmitted channeled by the controlled circulation of a fluid that is pressurized typically a water-soluble oil or water-glycol mixture to a motor. The motor converts it into a mechanical output that can do work on a load.
How does hydraulic power work?
Hydraulic power works based on the principle of Pascal’s Law. It was developed in the 17th century by a French mathematician and scientist Blaise Pascal. Pascal’s law states that applying pressure to a fluid in a pipe or tube will create an equivalently larger force on a larger area. Engineers use Pascal’s Principle to design hydraulic systems converting mechanical energy to fluid power.
Components of a Hydraulic System
The key components of a hydraulic power system include the pump, reservoir, valves, motor, hoses, filter, and accumulator. These are the main parts and the ones that must be present in order to produce hydraulic power.
Pump
A hydraulic pump’s primary function is to move hydraulic fluid from one place to another. This initiates hydraulic power production. The pump transmits mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. There are different types of hydraulic pumps including gear, vane, and piston. These pumps also have various subtypes intended for specific applications such as a bent-axis piston pump or a variable displacement vane pump. Although there are different types of hydraulic pump, they all work on the same principle which is to displace fluid volume against a resistant load or pressure.
Actuator
The function of the actuator is to turn hydraulic energy into mechanical energy with the use of the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic energy from the pump gets utilized and turned into force.
Valves
According to HFD Hydraulic, a hydraulic valve is a mechanical device found in hydraulic systems. They control the flow, pressure, and direction of hydraulic liquids. The significance of hydraulic valves are: Flow control, directional control, pressure regulation, precision in operations, safety measures, energy efficiency, versatility, reduced downtime, and longevity of equipment. These are discussed in What is a Hydraulic Valve: Its 7 Effective Anatomy Parts and Significance article.

Reservoir
The role of the reservoir in a hydraulic system is to store and regulate hydraulic fluid. Here are the functions of the reservoir:
Fluid Storage: The reservoir holds the hydraulic fluid in an appropriate location for the pump inlet. Also, it stores excess fluid that is needed when the system is up and running, like when a cylinder is being extended or an accumulator is being charged.
Fluid Conditioning: The reservoir helps in aerating or ventilating and cooling the hydraulic fluid, and to remove contaminants. Additionally, it vents air in and out of the tank as it separates from the fluid.
Pressure accumulator: The reservoir can also store energy in the form of fluid pressure which can be used to supply power to the system when needed.
Mounting Surface: Based on the size of the tank, the reservoir can also serve as a mounting surface for other system components like the electric control panel, the motor or filters.
Fluid level regulation: Another function of the reservoir is that it helps regulate fluid levels. The regulation of fluid levels is important for ensuring that the components are properly lubricated.
Pipes and hoses
The pipes and hoses carry the fluids to the other components.
Filters
The filters remove contaminants or pollutants from the hydraulic fluid and protect the system from damage.
Accumulator
The accumulator stores energy and releases it when needed to improve the system’s efficiency.
Types of Hydraulic Power Systems
Hydraulic systems can be placed in categories like closed & open loop systems and low & high pressure systems.
Open Loop vs. Closed Loop System
Closed loop circuits or hydrostatic systems connect a pump to a motor. Between these two components is where fluid flows in. The fluid flows through connecting hoses without going back to the tank. The closed loop system still employs an oil reservoir, however, they are smaller than those used in the open loop system. Also, closed loop circuits are used in high power, high pressure mobile equipment as they are more compact, space-efficient, lightweight, and less expensive. Typical examples where you can find closed loop systems are skid steers and refrigerating systems. Closed loop systems can easily achieve fine motor motion.

On the contrary, open loop systems include a pump, motor, and reservoir tank. The fluid is pumped from the reservoir through the components and then back to the reservoir. One of the advantages of an open loop loop system is its excellent capability in heart reduction vs. a closed loop system. Inside an open loop system, the fluid cycles through, returning to the tank at the end of the cycle where it loses heat before being cycled through the system again. On the other hand, a closed loop system does not allow heat dissipation. Also, open loop systems are typically less contaminated as well because any contaminants are given time to settle, whereas closed loop systems they will carry on with the circulation through the system. Since contamination is lower, the chances of damage is lower too. Great examples of open loop systems are turbines and heat exchangers.
High-pressure vs. Low-pressure systems
Most hydraulic system designers likely go immediately straight for high pressure systems, often because of the components that are tested and are known to work well together. High pressure systems are usually designed due to their use of smaller cylinders, which may be needed if the system needs to fit in a small space.
The primary differences between low and high pressure systems are the sizes of their reservoirs. The size could be an issue if you’re needing a small system since the reservoir size can have an effect on the pressure of the system.
Applications Of Hydraulic Power
For many industries, hydraulic power makes operations much easier. Hydraulics have been utilized in many industries as some physical work can be accomplished in a simpler and safer manner using hydraulic equipment. Here are Industries that rely on hydraulic power:
Industrial Machinery
Hydraulic systems are very much used in industrial machineries because they have the highest power density of any mechanical transmission system making them ideal for heavy-duty applications. One of the key advantages of hydraulic power in industrial machinery is its high power density. In a compact design, hydraulic systems produce a large amount of power that is very ideal in industries that have limited space but large amounts of power or force is required. Hydraulic power systems also offer precision and control where it allows operators to precisely adjust force, speed, and torque which is very significant for delicate operations needing fine or detailed adjustments. Hydraulic power is used in applications like press machines, injection molding machines. And material handling.
Construction equipment
In construction sites, heavy equipment is very typical to see as there are heavy tasks that need to be accomplished which can be easily done by hydraulic-powered equipment. Bulldozers and backhoes are great examples of construction machinery that rely on hydraulic power. They move large amounts of dirt and debris. For backhoes and bulldozers, the operator pushes on the soil that allows the shovel to lift heavy loads. Because of hydraulic power, tasks that take weeks to accomplish by workers only can be done within an hour or two with hydraulic equipment.
Automotive & Aviation
The automotive and aviation industries benefit greatly from hydraulic systems. For automotive, they use hydraulics both in the manufacturing and finished phase. For aerospace, hydraulic power is utilized for equipment like takeoff and landing gears.
Hydraulics are of great use when molding sheets of metal into the appropriate shape for car manufacturing. To move heavy components from one place to another, a large set of hydraulic equipment is used. This is also one of the most ideal uses of hydraulics, making automotive manufacturing easier.

Aerospace and aviation are few of the industries that contribute billions to the global GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and rely on the most advanced technology. With hydraulics present, getting to our chosen destination through air is possible as well as adjusting wings in flight, and opening/closing doors in aircrafts.
Agricultural Equipment
Without hydraulic power, a lot of tasks in planting and harvesting would take much longer to accomplish and would require much additional manpower. Hydraulic power for agriculture employs the three-point hitch. The three-point hitch is used to attach accessories like plows to a large tractor.
Advantages and Disadvantages Of Hydraulic Power
Hydraulic powered systems are essential in industries where consistent, reliable force is necessary because of their ability to deliver high power density and precise movement that powers heavy-duty machinery in various industries like construction, manufacturing, and material handling. On the other hand, while hydraulic systems are much appreciated for their strength, they also come with challenges which may affect their efficiency and maintenance. Now let’s understand both the advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic systems so we can leverage their full potential in different applications.
Advantages
Beginner-friendly and easy-to-use control system – if you’re just learning to operate heavy-duty hydraulic power equipment, it will be easy to understand as the design is also simple.
Smooth Operation – doesn’t cause unnecessary noise and vibration on the machine
Easy material handling and transfer – Heavy materials up to tons of weight are easy to move with one lift. Hydraulics can also move large power with relatively small components.
Durable & cost-saving – the component service life is long and can save the cost of acquiring new equipment.
Reversible, precise, and flexible – can be rotated in reverse direction with accuracy and flexibility.
Disadvantages
Accident prone – if the power is too high and the pipeline is not able to withstand the power delivered by the fluid, the high pressure received by the fluid can also cause accidents. Also, a single small leak in the pipeline can be fatal to the transfer of power.
Internal leakage: The undesirable seepages of fluids or air often detected between ports (internal leakages) can occur in shuttle valves resulting in many inefficiencies. It could also be tough for systems that require accuracy in control of pathways with the necessary isolation values. Leakage takes place if the shuttle does not have a good seal (to block).
Delicate – hydraulic systems often require components with very high degree of precision
Increased maintenance – they require intensive and periodic maintenance
